Since its inception in 2001, the Center for Vaccine Development – Mali has grown into one of Africa’s foremost institutions in vaccine research, infectious disease control, and health system strengthening.
From its roots in vaccinology, CVD-Mali has evolved into a national and regional leader in operational research, large-scale program implementation, and the translation of evidence into health policy.

7.47 million doses of azithromycin delivered nationally by January 2026, including the northern regions.

REACH Mali teams have now covered all geographical regions of Mali, including the northern regions of Gao, Kidal, Menaka, Taodenit and Tomboctou.
3.67 million children treated during MDA 1 in the five southern regions.

Driving CVD-Mali’s mission to combine rigorous science with equity, partnership, and local capacity building is Director-General, Professor Samba Ousmane Sow.
In Mali: As Minister of Health, Professor Sow expanded community-based healthcare, and instigated ground-breaking health reforms.
In Africa: A leader in regional collaborations to reduce child mortality and strengthen maternal health systems.
Globally: A former WHO Special Envoy for COVID-19 and member of numerous international advisory bodies, Professor Sow works to put Africa’s voice front and center in global health decision-making.
