CVD-Mali operates on the basis of a simple but far-reaching idea: those who directly experience challenges, in their own lives, must be the ones to lead solutions.
From its originating collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, CVD-Mali has evolved into a proudly African-led institution.
It is trusted locally, influential nationally, and respected throughout the world.
What really sets CVD-Mali apart, however, isn’t just what we do but how we do it.

Community, equity, global reach
CVD-Mali’s work begins with people.
Families and health workers – who know their communities and neighborhoods like the backs of their hands – are at the heart of our approach.
In everything we do, we seek to ensure that solutions reflect the real needs of communities. This “community first” approach builds trust, sets the foundations for lasting impact, and anchors innovation in lived experience.

Principles – and practice
CVD-Mali endorses the principle of equity, of course, but we also enforce its practice.
African scientists lead the research agenda, shape priorities, and make decisions. They lead and own their work, taking it from their local sites and laboratories to the world.
The effects of this model now stretch far beyond Mali’s borders. Evidence generated here has helped shape World Health Organization policies, informed donor investments, and guided vaccine strategies that save lives worldwide. Under the leadership of Professor Samba Sow, CVD-Mali has consistently demonstrated that Africa can set the global health agenda, not just follow it.
WORKING WITH US
“The CVD-Mali way”
We are always seeking new partners and collaborators to join “the CVD-Mali way”.
Working with us offers partners and collaborators three principal returns:
Return on impact
Advancing maternal and child health where the needs are greatest.
Return on equity
Shifting power toward African leadership and institutions, while fostering partnerships that are just and inclusive.
Return on sustainability
Building long-term scientific capacity that endures well beyond individual projects.
Working with CVD-Mali is a commitment to a fairer, more just model of global health; one in which Africa leads, where innovation is rooted in community, and where the effects of that approach may be felt, in the first place, in those communities that require vital interventions, and subsequently across the world.
