The Home Birth Bundle
A vital package to protect mothers and babies in Mali
The Home Birth Bundle is an innovative program designed to improve the health and survival of mothers and newborns across Mali.
Led by CVD-Mali in partnership with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the initiative brings together proven, low-cost interventions that address the leading risks women face during pregnancy and childbirth.
The package includes:
- Multiple micronutrient supplements to support healthy pregnancies and improve birth outcomes.
- Preventive treatment for malaria in pregnancy, protecting mothers and their babies from one of the most dangerous infections in the region.
- Azithromycin during childbirth, reducing the risk of maternal infection and sepsis.
- Misoprostol after delivery, helping to prevent postpartum hemorrhage, one of the leading causes of maternal death.
Over the next three years, the Home Birth Bundle will reach 320,000 women across eight districts in four regions of Mali.
By combining these simple, evidence-based measures, the program has the potential to transform maternal and child health; to save lives, reinforce community-based maternal health systems, and bring about lasting impact.
